As the “fabric of our lives”, we come in contact with items made from cotton every day. Why wouldn’t we want the clothes we wear, the sheets we sleep on, the diapers we put on our baby to be natural and safe.
Organic cotton is cotton that is produced and certified to organic agricultural standards. It is grown in a way that uses methods and materials that lessen the impact on our environment without the use of pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other crop in the world. It is estimated that each year cotton producers use as much as 25 percent of the world’s insecticides and more than 10 percent of the world’s pesticides; an unbelievable amount for a single crop. These toxins are harmful to farmers and workers, us as consumers, and entire wildlife eco-systems.
We can feel the harmful effects of non-organic cotton and fabrics in our daily lives. Irritated skin, rashes, headaches, and dizziness can be caused by the chemical residue trapped in the threads. Even more alarming is that babies ‘skin, which is 30% thinner than adults, absorbs harmful additives easier but are less able to naturally break down or eliminate these chemicals. Additionally, they are more vulnerable as their bodies and brains are still developing.
So moms, next time you are shopping for your precious bundle of joy, think about the fact that it took about a pound of chemicals to produce that cute little cotton romper you are eyeing. Do you want your baby’s delicate and sensitive skin against that residue?
